Most people just think that the guy who is covered in grease and fixed my car is an idiot. Yes it is looked down upon to do your own work on yout car, but some people who fix their own car or cars in general are some of the smartest people you may know.
But I think most of use who work on their own cars just dont trust anyone else or fell better knowing they did and save in some cases save alot of money in the process.2000 XJ with goodies soon to be in pieces

Go drive through a nice well off neighborhood, do you see anyone working on their cars?
I get customers all day who are very well off and look down on us like we are monkeys.
Side note, people with nice cars are cheap as hell. I put more nice name brand tires on lower quality or average quality then i do on the lincolns, mercedes, bmws, cadillacs etc. They all buy cheap ass made in china tires. But farmer john will come in and buy goodyears or coopers, or bfgs or mastercrafts or toyo etc for their beat up truck.Last edited by Kyle; 08-26-2010, 03:52 PM.Lady bugs don't like it when you paint stripes on them

You guy said it. People who don't work on their own cars think it is sort of redneck and lower class to do so. It is immediately linked to having a messy driveway with cars and parts strewn around, as many rednecks have. Unfortunately it is just the way it is. I also agree that it definitely comes with the territory.P8R

Society says it's dirty, low and unclean to work on your own vehicles. Your neighbor's poodle might have a fit and piss indoors, and it's obviously not the dog's fault, but yours for working on your own car within sight of someone's house.
It's the NIMBY way of thinking.
I just ignore people who gripe about it.2000 XJ: "The Black Jeep"MK2 Jetta > M3Chairman of the Chechnyan Space Program

Talked with my dad about this briefly and he believes it comes down to property value, if you go to look at a house and the neighbor has shit piled up around his house, are you gonna want to move their?God made the world in seven days, on the 7th day, he made the Le Car

Its not really looked down on I think, people just dont like to do anything anymore. I know plenty of engineers who work on thousand horsepower diesels and take their car to a garage because they dont want to deal with it.
Actually, I`ve been thinking of taking my bike to a dealer to get the valves done because I dont want to deal with it. A few weeks ago I readjusted the valve lash on our 3000hp auxiliary diesel. Its not hard, I just dont feel like doing it.I don't always drink orange juice, but when I do, I prefer to chew it. #madpulp

i make great money where i work and being that cars these days are so complex, it's just easier to bring them to a dealer. a jeep or older car is one thing but all the new sensors, electronics and special tools needed for jobs now are outrageous. i pay a dealer to work on my vehicles, i suggest you do the same
be back later i have a transmission to install on a subaru tonight cause i'm brokeI drive a Datsun
