1987 Land Rover Range Rover Classic SWB
3.5 V8 w/ 70k
The main reason for purchase was an impending 3000 mile trip to florida and back to tow all my 'stuff' that is in storage to boston finally. Instead of renting a uhaul for $1200 and a buying a flight for another $150, I decided to just put the money toward another truck that can tow. After that, its main purpose will be winter transportation. The M3 hasnt seen salt yet, and I dont intend to let it any time soon. And lastly, it will be a wheeler. Stock height is pretty decent and I must say, I am pretty confident that it is better suited for wheeling, stock, than any jeep short of the rubi. With long radius arms, really nothing hanging below the frame, and lots of clearance from the factory, I think it will do well.
Other than significant sun damage, some minor body rot, minor mechanical issues (all related to dry rot), and surface frame rust this thing runs and drives like any car with 70k on it. Engine was pressure tested, etc and all is good, it has new coils/shocks underneath, various spare parts in the trunk to fix issues, and obvious attempts at fix-her-ups (new sheet metal in spots, etc). I'm hoping, stock, it can be decent enough to lightly wheel... then with a small lift and real tread, it can be enough to do some good unlocked wheeling.
Issues as of purchase:
- short on wipers, popping fuse
- 2 windows dont go down
- No cool air from ac
- Belts loose/breaking consistently
- Rear window gate stuck closed
- no audio
- no cruise control
- slight tramlining
- Angry sparrow under the hood (probably belt related)
New Issues:
none
Build plans:
- 2" BB and 1" BL; I decided to go with the LR version of a BB (aluminum blocks on the coils instead of pucks) because there is no room for tires to tuck into the wheel wells so the BB will reduce the need to bump stop, and the coils are almost brand new, as are the shocks.
- Rover bolt pattern steelies ($66 a pop) with 33x12.5x16 KM2's
- 4 to 6 speaker audio system
Done:
- tailgate fixed
- ac charged
- wipers fixed
- Windows all work; one needed to be wired and one needed a new motor
- Belts tensioned; a tensioner pully bracket was broken, replaced with one off ebay and tensioned all belts
- Current stereo wired; 2 speakers and a tape player, not rocket science
- Some minor cosmetic fixes
Here it is on the day of purchase;
