  • Manual hubs on a 30?

Im looking into doing something with manual locking hubs. I have a hp 30 but don't want to spend the $800 on the warn hubs. I've read about cutting the c's off of a cj 44 and swapping them over to the 30 but i don't have nearly enough skills to do that.

Has anyone ever looked into a project like this? im keeping my eyes out for a cheap 44 that i can build over time (like a winter project) but chances are ill be to cheap to invest in another front axle in the near future.

only if you're willing to go 5 on 5.5 that's what all CJ have.
are you currently 5 on 4.5?

I have outers from a ford D44 you can have cheap they are 5 on 5.5, u-joint should be the same so you can just swap everything out
Sounds like a lot of work for little gain if you ask me.

I would be able to get adapters for the bolt pattern correct? and what is involved in putting the 44 outers?, i would like to spool the front (of course they don't make them for the 30) and just unlock the hubs for the street. I think that i might just save the money for a cable locker

funny that i was typing that then deleted it. I've heard bad things on welding a 30 carrier but if i can do something like that and unlock the hubs i would be set.

I got on this idea looking at my buddies chevy with a welded front.

You geared it, right? When you did the 30, did the long shaft come out as two pieces?

Just inner of the u-joint. Not including the part outboard of the ujoint.

it was all one piece besides the u joint seperating the inner and outer.

On an 89? did you swap front axles?

I thought Renix era was all vac-disco. My bad if I'm wrong, though.

If you can find one with vac-disco, that could be useful in some cases. Probably don't feel like swapping the whole housing just for the mid-shaft disconnect, though. I wouldn't blame you.

Probably asked, but why manuals instead of a front Aussie? The locker's only engaged when there's power to the driveshaft, so in 2wd it's fine.
