  • School Me on building a 3 link

Going to be building a 3 link on my new rig and have been doing some homework on it trying to figure out everything. Basically looking for any insight you guys can give me, I figure the more knowledge I can get the better

PLAY WITH THE CALCULATOR, TAKE ALOT OF MEASUREMENTS.
    SEE WHAT YA LIKE
    KEEP YOUR ANTISQUAT UNDER 100%.
TRY TO KEEP THE LOWERS CLOSE TO HORIZONTAL.
KEEP SOME GOOD VERTICLE SEPERATION ON THE AXLE.
THE POSITION OF THE UPPER HAS ALOT TO DO WITH YOUR NUMBERS.

I THIKN THERE IS A READ ME FILE OR SOMETHIN LIKE THAT THAT YA CAN USE... ITS DEF A BIT CONFUSING AT FIRST, BUT IF YA LOOK THRU OTHER PEOPLES PLANS AND GET SOME IDEAS WITH THEIR NUMBERS YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT PRETTY FAST

          I agree with the bold.

Dont worry about the numbers. You can build an awesome 3 link in the calculator but if your COG and all the inputs arent right then the numbers are off anyways and 99% of the time it wont fit how you built it in the calculator anyways. Build it so it fits the rig. Keep the links as flat as possible and as much seperation as you can fit.

my lowers are 2degrees at ride height, my upper is -3 degrees, there is 8inchs of vertical seperation. although depending on the rig (if its an xj), you probably won't be able to get away with a lower angle that flat and still have any uptravel at all.

3 link is difficult with an xj though cause theres not alot of clearance for that long upper arm (depending on how much lift you are running), thats why i really like sam's mid arm setup for an xj not running a crap load of lift. Don't get me wrong it can deff be done effectively, but like toreadorranger said it will be hard translating from the calculator to the vehicle, your measurements need to be spot on and you're gonna have to spend alot of time going between the truck and the computer.

post us pics as you go
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Thanks for the advice guys And as soon as I can get some cash together Ill get the ball rolling on this... I kinda think im just going to build it on the rig and use the basic ideas of a 3link and hope for the best... whats the worst that could happen I have to start again? This is definatly a learning experience for me

cant say i totally agree but that doesent matter

why build a custom 3 link when you can buy a long arm kit like everyone else?
